RT Moscow Op-Edge 15th December, 2013 – It’s Putin vs Bandar Bush on the Syrian chessboard

Everyone remembers the spectacular four-and-a-half hour meeting last August in Moscow between President Putin and Bandar Bush – aka Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi Arabia’s Director of National Intelligence.

Well, there was a remix last week, also in Moscow. And once again in absolute secrecy, until a formidable leak from “a close and reliable source” in Russia reached Lebanese newspaper al-Manar.

Bandar Bush’s first offensive was a disaster; not only did Putin rebuff his attempt to “bribe” Moscow into abandoning Damascus, but subsequently Russia was pivotal in preventing the Obama administration from bombing Syria.

… President Putin’s answer can be summarized as a model of restraint. The “opposition” armed and financed by Saudi Arabia and Qatar is on a losing streak. Saudi support for the opposition has nothing to do with democracy; these “rebels” are in fact terrorists.

Neither Damascus nor Moscow needs Saudi funds to rebuild Syria; Russia, Iran and China will do the job. Moreover, Russia and the US reached an understanding that takfiri terrorism is a danger not only to American security, but to Russian and global security. The Europeans – fearful of returnee terrorists – also agree.

As the cherry on the sundae, Putin suggested to Bandar Bush to abandon “sectarian instigations and supporting terrorism, because it is a double edged sword that will rebound inside Saudi Arabia and gather momentum in a manner that you will not be able to control.”

  1. Wheels within wheels, AA. The mess in the ME is like a cocktail of random chemicals. Who knows what toxic effects will emerge? It’s an absolute son-of-a-bitch figuring the players and their theoretics. The easiest course for me is just to distrust all of them…without exception.

  2. For anyone wondering, and even for those who haven’t, I’ve been a bit under the weather lately so my comment frequency’s been down a bit. Feeling much better and more or less back to normal now (viral stomach infection – these things get around this time of year), so normal service should be resumed soon 🙂

  3. Ahhhhgggg…… wrote a 20 mins on topic there only to close effin tab by misstook…

So now where the fk was i…

Ben, they certainly do not deserve you’re trust. But they ( elite) don’t care ( 9/11 )
They have themselves so well protected in the Police state, and they Own the Propaganda criminals of the MSM…

Then the Smug B£$%&rds turn up at Mandela’s Memorial day in S.F….. Scream.

The stories that were coming out of Libya were Horrible, but from Syria it’s been worse…Heartbreaking what our so called leaders are getting away with…

Stop the War Coalition have a take on it from yesterday

The US, Britain and France do not have many options left except to try to control the jihadi Frankenstein’s monster that they helped create in Syria and which is already helping destabilise Iraq and Lebanon. Turkey may soon regret having given free passage to so many jihadi on their way to Syria. Ankara could close its 500-mile border with Syria or filter those who cross it. But Turkish policy in Syria and Iraq has been so dysfunctional in the past three years that it may be too late to correct the consequences of wrongly convincing itself that Assad would fall.

The Geneva II peace conference on Syria looks as if it will be born dead. In so far as the FSA and its civilian counterparts ever represented anyone in Syria they do so no longer. The armed opposition is dominated by Saudi-sponsored Islamist brigades on the one hand and by al-Qa’ida affiliates on the other.

And recently from the U.N…..a report here with the U.N wording on the Chem attacks….

On Thursday the 12th of December, the U.N. team investigating the persistent reports of alleged chemical weapons usage in Syria released their findings.

    Lastly from Global research….

RT’s Meghan Lopez speaks with Mother Agnes-Mariam de la Croix, founder of the James the Mutilated Monastery in Syria, who says that the videos show the chemical weapons were used by Syrian rebels, not the Assad administration.

  4. ‘viral stomach infection’. Was that a physicians diagnosis, AA? Virus may preceed a bacterial infection. Is that what you meant? They are really pushing back on antibiotics these days, so you have to bully your Dr. into giving you a prescrip.

  5. brian; Cheers, dood. It looks like you’re trying to cram a days worth of news into an evening.

AA; BTW, did you know LIVE garlic is THE best anti-biotic as well as anti-inflammatory? If you can’t stand it raw, saute as little as possible in some OO or grass=fed butter…..smoosh and put on anything you wish that’s savory, not sweet/

  6. AA; Your immune system is your friend. After antibiotics, get some probiotics to re-establish the beneficial organisms in your gut. Research is showing the gut to play a central role in the immunology of the body. Fresh ginger, fresh garlic cannot be overdone. As for the social part of garlic; it is overrated as a negative. It’s the powdered garlic imposter that commits the most sins.

  7. BTW; As to eating fresh garlic, the only complaint I ever received was from my beloved Sue. This was after I ate 25-30 whole cloves of roasted garlic with a coating of olive oil and sea salt at a buffet. Even at that, I think she imagined it because when sees a cheeseburger ad on TeeVee she swears she smells it. 🙂

The UN – Lady Amos et al. She is a hypocrite (see below) and now has a niche in the UN.

A Mark Schnellbaecher from Miliband D’s International Rescue Committee was interviewed on BBC News earlier and was followed by Lyse Doucet. By inference the creation of refugees is all Assad’s fault. No mention of the rebels and their backers or of the Cameron/Hague attempt to perform another Libya style invasion earlier in the year which would have had catastrophic results.

  9. Squonk, good to see you back, and I wish you a speedy recovery. Thanks for that snippet of the other side’s propaganda…

…anyone know how our side’s propaganda is handling the same event? Has it even been mentioned?

Mary, thank you for making use of the valuable resource of Craig’s blog. I wish that others would follow your example.

  10. I remember Press TV (Iran) and DEBKA (Israel) both carried the same story (a year or so ago) that Bandar Bush had been assassinated. It fascinated me that DEBKA and Press TV both carried the same story. It doubly fascinated me that Google filtered out DEBKA’s and PressTV’s story from their news search results at the time. Both still appeared in appropriate “web” searches but not “news” searches. Google normally includes DEBKA and PressTV in news search results so these stories were explicitly filtered out.

It is very rare to see DEBKA and PressTV carry the same story. It is even rarer for Google “news” index to filter out a story from both organisations. I can’t think of another occasion the triple combination happened.

  11. The situation in Gaza is the worst for many years and that is saying something. They have overflowing sewage, floods from the recent storm, shortages of fuel and hence of electricity and of food and medical supplies.

An Open Letter to the People of Brazil
    By Edward Snowden
    Source: Folha De S. Paulo
    Tuesday, December 17, 2013

Six months ago, I stepped out from the shadows of the United States Government’s National Security Agency to stand in front of a journalist’s camera.

I shared with the world evidence proving some governments are building a world-wide surveillance system to secretly track how we live, who we talk to, and what we say.

I went in front of that camera with open eyes, knowing that the decision would cost me family and my home, and would risk my life. I was motivated by a belief that the citizens of the world deserve to understand the system in which they live.

My greatest fear was that no one would listen to my warning. Never have I been so glad to have been so wrong. The reaction in certain countries has been particularly inspiring to me, and Brazil is certainly one of those.

At the NSA, I witnessed with growing alarm the surveillance of whole populations without any suspicion of wrongdoing, and it threatens to become the greatest human rights challenge of our time.

The NSA and other spying agencies tell us that for our own “safety”-for Dilma’s “safety,” for Petrobras’ “safety”-they have revoked our right to privacy and broken into our lives. And they did it without asking the public in any country, even their own.

Today, if you carry a cell phone in Sao Paolo, the NSA can and does keep track of your location: they do this 5 billion times a day to people around the world.

When someone in Florianopolis visits a website, the NSA keeps a record of when it happened and what you did there. If a mother in Porto Alegre calls her son to wish him luck on his university exam, NSA can keep that call log for five years or more.

They even keep track of who is having an affair or looking at pornography, in case they need to damage their target’s reputation.

American Senators tell us that Brazil should not worry, because this is not “surveillance,” it’s “data collection.” They say it is done to keep you safe. They’re wrong.

There is a huge difference between legal programs, legitimate spying, legitimate law enforcement – where individuals are targeted based on a reasonable, individualized suspicion – and these programs of dragnet mass surveillance that put entire populations under an all-seeing eye and save copies forever.

These programs were never about terrorism: they’re about economic spying, social control, and diplomatic manipulation. They’re about power.

Many Brazilian senators agree, and have asked for my assistance with their investigations of suspected crimes against Brazilian citizens.

I have expressed my willingness to assist wherever appropriate and lawful, but unfortunately the United States government has worked very hard to limit my ability to do so — going so far as to force down the Presidential Plane of Evo Morales to prevent me from traveling to Latin America!

Until a country grants permanent political asylum, the US government will continue to interfere with my ability to speak.

Six months ago, I revealed that the NSA wanted to listen to the whole world. Now, the whole world is listening back, and speaking out, too. And the NSA doesn’t like what it’s hearing.

The culture of indiscriminate worldwide surveillance, exposed to public debates and real investigations on every continent, is collapsing.

Only three weeks ago, Brazil led the United Nations Human Rights Committee to recognize for the first time in history that privacy does not stop where the digital network starts, and that the mass surveillance of innocents is a violation of human rights.

The tide has turned, and we can finally see a future where we can enjoy security without sacrificing our privacy. Our rights cannot be limited by a secret organization, and American officials should never decide the freedoms of Brazilian citizens.

Even the defenders of mass surveillance, those who may not be persuaded that our surveillance technologies have dangerously outpaced democratic controls, now agree that in democracies, surveillance of the public must be debated by the public.

My act of conscience began with a statement: “I don’t want to live in a world where everything that I say, everything I do, everyone I talk to, every expression of creativity or love or friendship is recorded.

That’s not something I’m willing to support, it’s not something I’m willing to build, and it’s not something I’m willing to live under.”

Days later, I was told my government had made me stateless and wanted to imprison me. The price for my speech was my passport, but I would pay it again: I will not be the one to ignore criminality for the sake of political comfort. I would rather be without a state than without a voice.

If Brazil hears only one thing from me, let it be this: when all of us band together against injustices and in defense of privacy and basic human rights, we can defend ourselves from even the most powerful systems.

    Dr. Eyad el-Sarraj
    http://mitchellplitnick.com/2013/12/17/dr-eyad-el-sarraj/

    Some background –

(Dr) el-Sarraj was born in Beersheba, Mandatory Palestine on 27 April 1944 to a Palestinian Arab Muslim family. His family arrived in the Gaza Strip as refugees in 1948 and they were never allowed to return home.[2]

On 29 June 2009 Dr el-Sarraj appeared before the United Nations fact finding mission into Operation Cast Lead. He appeared as a witness on behalf of the “Gaza Community Mental Health Programme.” He stated that 20% of the children in Gaza suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorders. His evidence is quoted in the final report, known as the Goldstone Report.[3][4]

The “Gaza Community Mental Health Programme” (GCMHP) (which) was founded by Dr el-Sarraj has 40 members of staff. Its premises were destroyed on 30 December (2008) in an Israeli Air Force air-strike.

Dr el-Sarraj is President of Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace International, a network of Palestinian, Israeli, and International faculty, and students, working in for an end of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and just peace.[1]

    Gordon Corera
    Security correspondent, BBC News

‘Few expected the amount of detail that Sir Peter Gibson has provided in his report.

It MAY may be unfinished but it raises serious issues – 27 in all – ranging from Britain’s role in rendition to what ministers were told and WHETHER they asked enough questions.

Campaigners had raised questions about Sir Peter’s independence.

Those MAY now have been answered but the next issue is WHETHER the Intelligence and Security Committee will be able to get to the truth.

One of the issues Sir Peter raises in his report is WHETHER the committee was given enough information for its previous inquiries into the subject which did not get close to the truth.

The ISC says it does have more powers now to investigate but it faces a significant task in trying to deal with allegations the prime minister has described as a stain on the country’s reputation.’

  22. Two terror attacks in Russia in the past 24 hours. Is Bandar bin Sultan doing what he said he’d do?

  23. This man is Pavel Pechyonkin born in the Mari El region and who joined resistance forces in 2012.

He is the the trolleybus suicide bomber.

According to this FSB information, Pechyonkin, aged 32, is a former paramedic. In 2012, he joined the bandit underground, having left a note for his mother on his lap top computer. Pechyonkin has since communicated with his parents two or three times via the Internet.

Pechyonkin was in Islamic rebel held territories of Syria controlled and funded by Saudi Arabia.

On the 27 August 2013 Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a massive strike against Saudi Arabia if the UK and America attacked Syria.

In response Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan, secretly offered Russia a sweeping deal to control the global oil market and safeguard Russia’s gas contracts, if the Kremlin backs away from the Assad regime in Syria.

When Putin refused Prince Bandar’s ‘offer,’ the DailyTelegraph reported that Prince Bandar had stated to Putin, “I can give you a guarantee to protect the Winter Olympics next year. The Chechen groups that threaten the security of the games are controlled by us.”

Bandar then came to the Kremlin in August 2013 and in a secret meeting with Putin reiterated his threat to cause terror in Russia to which Putin suggested to the Saudis that they abandon “sectarian instigations and supporting terrorism, because it is a double edged sword that will rebound inside Saudi Arabia and gather momentum in a manner that you will not be able to control.”

This was in Britain not in America. Britain was organizing an invasion of rebels into Syria. They even asked me, although I was no longer minister for foreign affairs, if I would like to participate”

I found the original interview, in French, on YouTube:

“2014 will show us the ‘Bear’ is not amused!””

I wonder how good a call that threat seems to Bandar now. Or maybe he really does have the control he boasted of. I guess there’s always a chance he said no such thing and this will justify some future Russian action.

It’s Springtime for Bandar and House of Saud. Arabia is happy and gay.

  26. On January 22, so-called Geneva II peace talks are scheduled to begin. Mid-2012 Geneva I talks ended in failure. Washington prevented success.

Talks were called a “last ditch effort” to halt violence. Similar rhetoric followed Kofi Annan’s one-sided peace plan.

It placed the conflict ending burden on Assad. It did so unfairly. Western backed death squads bear full responsibility.

Since conflict erupted, Assad’s been wrongfully blamed for their crimes. He’s more victim than villain.

Washington wants him ousted. It wants him prevented from defending his people. If not him, who will?

Obama, complicit NATO partners, Israel, and rogue regional despots want him toppled. They want him out violently. Peaceful resolution is smoke screen deception….

On January 8, Russia blocked Washington’s latest Security Council effort. It wrongfully blame Assad.

One-sided SC language condemned him for attacking Western-backed death squads in Aleppo.

On December 19, Moscow vetoed a draft Aleppo bombing statement. It wrongfully blamed Assad. He’s defending his people. He’s acting responsibly.

He’s battling Western-backed death squads. He’s defending ordinary Syrians. Washington disgracefully calls him a “brutal dictator.”

On January 7, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki wrongfully accused him of “kill(ing) tens of thousands of his people.”

He’s “not someone that we see a future for in…Syria,” she added. “You know what our focus is,” she claimed. It’s “bringing an end to the suffering and bloodshed of the Syrian people.”

It bears repeating. Washington bears full responsibility. Assad is doing his job. He’s doing what any leader would do.

He’s fighting terrorism. He’s battling death squad invaders. They’ve committed horrific atrocities. Western media largely ignore them. Assad is blamed for their crimes.

Expect Washington to manipulate planned Geneva II talks. Psaki stressed “putting a transitional government in place.”

Talks aren’t about peaceful conflict resolution. They’re for regime change. Syrians alone may decide who’ll lead them.

Washington wants them denied. America’s agenda alone matters. National sovereignty doesn’t count. Nor do rule of law principles. US policy makers violate them consistently.

No nation operates more lawlessly than America. None does so more egregiously. None causes more harm. Washington does it globally.

Ravaging one nation after another is longstanding US policy. So is blaming victims for its crimes. Assad is in the eye of the storm. Iran’s turn is next.

Congressional hawks want war, not peace. Obama blocked Tehran’s Geneva II participation. According to Psaki:

“Iran has done nothing but help (Assad), help bring foreign fighters in, help the regime’s efforts to brutalize the Syrian people.”

“And if they wanted to send a message to the world about their seriousness of having a positive outcome, there are steps they could take.”

“There’s no indication that they have any desire or interest in taking any of these steps.”

“(U)nless Iran endorses, supports, (and) embraces the Geneva (II) communique, we wouldn’t support their attendance.”

Washington wants its language blaming Assad for ongoing conflict. It wants transitional government approved. It wants pro-Western stooges in charge.

It wants Syrians having no say. When Geneva I ended, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said:

“Assad will still have to go. What we have done here is to strip away the fiction that he and those with blood on their hands can stay in power.”

Shameless copy paste job Squonk… Hope you all don’t mind… Anyhoo more from this Piece @

Kerry insisted the U.S. had solid intelligence on the locations of the Syrian government’s launch sites used in the attack, thus justifying a U.S. military retaliation which was only narrowly averted. Now, those U.S. government’s claims have collapsed

KERRY – “And read for yourselves the verdict, reached by our intelligence community about the chemical weapons attack the Assad regime inflicted on the opposition and on opposition controlled or contested neighborhoods in the Damascus suburbs on the early morning of August 21st.”

KERRY – ” Our intelligence community has carefully reviewed and re-reviewed information regarding this attack. And I will tell you it has done so more than mindful of the Iraq experience. We will not repeat that moment. Accordingly, we have taken unprecedented steps to declassify and make facts available to people who can judge for themselves.” ( Facts made available….utter shite )

Kerry – “Well, we know that the Assad regime has the largest chemical weapons programs in the entire Middle East. We know that the regime has used those weapons multiple times this year, and has used them on a smaller scale but still it has used them against its own people, including not very far from where last Wednesday’s attack happened” ( Endless evil lies)

KERRY “We know where the rockets were launched from, and at what time. We know where they landed, and when. We know rockets came only from regime-controlled areas and went only to opposition-controlled or contested neighborhoods.”

KERRY “Instead of being tucked safely in their beds at home, we saw rows of children lying side by side, sprawled on a hospital floor, all of them dead from Assad’s gas and surrounded by parents and grandparents who had suffered the same fate.”

KERRY ” The United States government now knows that at least 1,429 Syrians were killed in this attack, including at least 426 children. Even the first-responders, the doctors, nurses and medics who tried to save them, they became victims themselves. We saw them gasping for air, terrified that their own lives were in danger.
This is the indiscriminate, inconceivable horror of chemical weapons. This is what Assad did to his own people.”

( LIES Lies Lies, the evil shit just goes on and on – @

    Kerry – “We know this”.

Secretary of State John Kerry misled the American people last summer when he assured them that the U.S. government knew for a fact that the Syrian government was responsible for the Aug. 21 Sarin gas attack outside Damascus, an incident that killed several hundred people and nearly prompted a U.S. military assault.

A NEW REPORT BY TWO AMERICAN WEAPONS SPECIALISTS, entitled “Possible Implications of Faulty US Technical Intelligence in the Damascus Nerve Agent Attack,” makes clear that the case presented by Kerry and the Obama administration was scientifically impossible because the range of the key rocket carrying Sarin was less than a third of what the U.S. government was claiming.
