The General Discussion Thread

[Publish Date updated to restore to front page]

Okay as an experiment here it is. Discuss your favourite generals here!

Well perhaps… Really this is simply the place to post news-items, fun-items or whatever takes your fancy. In short just post what you want here.

It’s just another wee experiment – comments welcome.

Squonk.

  1. Busy xmas eve day. Wish all a Merry Christmas….AA, Clark, Brian, Fred Phil Trow….

    And everyone….

  2. Must say that I enjoy the holidays much more than I used to.

Almost all the presents and cards have been cut down to only a very few, resulting in much fewer in return.

Thank God there are no more year-accounts of what families, especially distant acquaintances, have experienced. I never resorted to that kind of mental torture.

This year I don’t even have a tree, and there are no decorations around the apartment.

Taking in a nephew’s Norfolk pine which had been cast away stopped most of that since my sister couldn’t find hers for it.

Xmas has been reduced to calls to and from friends, and a few festive meals.

    Just the way I like.

    Cheers all.

  4. Frohe Weihnacht to you all, regardless. This Christmas is somehow special as we also have hada wee new yin making her presence. She is special as she was born in her cowl, apparently only 1/80.000 get born this way. Fishermen of past used to pay for those cowl’s in the belief that it would make their boat unsinkable.

and a happy new year thrown in for good measure….;)

  6. Congratulations to the two granddaddies! And Happy New Year to everyone. I may be gone for a little while. Got a glitch in my back.
Stay safe and well, all y’all.

  7. It’s just about freezing here. The car’s external thermometer read 3 centigrade when I left Brentwood at about 23:55. That fell to 2 and then 1 as I drove through Mountnessing, Ingatestone and Margaretting. The grass was frosty but the roads looked damp or dry all the way. Then up Ivy Barn Lane it went down to -1, the roads were white and there was freezing mist in places. Temps varied between -1 and +1 through the woods and the village.

Clear sky, no moon; spectacular stars. Sirius Dog, brilliant straight south, hunter Orion exulting upright above him to the right, his sword of gleaming nebulae hanging from his belt. Continuing up and west, the head of the bull pointing straight down like a V, Aldebaran looming red at the top of the left horn, then the Seven Sisters, with the Milky Way between them and Cassiopeia. Good old Polaris pinning the centre as always (pole shift theorists go back to sleep), and then the Great Bear, facing Cassiopeia like a question mask. Continuing east, Leo pouncing from beneath the horizon, and above them all, homely orange Capella, like the brilliant bobble on the cosmic conductor’s hat.

  8. Itzy..

  9. “I reckon this one will be handy if we all have to start out again. Best not wait till the 4 minute warning before printing it, though.”

I wonder if peoples would head for the cities assuming the government would provide for them or stay in the country and provide for themselves. I think they would amass in the population centres and wait for the food drops that may never come.

  10. @Brian. OK, here’s this years present. You like a good drum beat. This might be a bit militaristic for your taste, but hey, it’s the Swiss Top Secret Drum Corp, at least they’re not shooting anyone …….

@Fred. I reckon 95 % of people would stay where they were. The other 5% would swap places 🙂

“.. But no Avenue for Private Email.”

Eh? My comment of December 31, 2016 at 3:51 pm links to an image of an e-mail address for me, or you can see it on my home page. I used an image instead of text so it doesn’t lead to me getting spammed – images are human-readable but not so easy for the bots that spammers use for harvesting e-mail addresses. You have to type it in yourself, but at least it’s short!

You can send to that address and I’ll receive, but I can’t reply from it because I rejected GMX’s new Terms and Conditions. I’ll reply from [my first name] [at] [my sub.domain.com]

Ah, so that’s Andrew in the photo; that’d be 2014. I think that’s a fuel bowser behind us; I look like I’m wondering if it’s empty.

  13. A terrible signal
    Too weak to even recognize
    A gentle collapsing
    The removal of the insides

    I’m touched by your pleas
    I value these moments
    We’re order than we realize
    …in someone’s eyes

    A frequent returning
    And leaving unnoticed
    A condition of mercy
    A change in the weather

    A view to remember
    The center is missing
They question how the future lies
    …in someone’s eyes
    The gentle collapsing
    Of every surface
We travel on the quiet road
    …the overload

  14. Been doing stretching (gently, and repeatedly) thanks to Clark and Brian – and I feel a lot better.

Despite sudden deaths of two fathers of friends of our offspring, on New Year’s Eve. Bit of a downer. Very unexpected. By the way, Clark, I loved your description of the ‘spectacular stars’.

Is Ben now posting at CM’s as “Rattlebone”? Or even “äșș者仁äčŸ”?

  15. Itzy..

I always wondered about our Black security friend…His Story..The Dude next to Straw hat…

  16. Itzy, sorry about your bad news. A good friend’s brother was found dead yesterday – suicide. I linked The Overload by Talking Heads – I have the feeling our society is falling in on itself, “the center is missing”. We need to stop blaming politics and begin communicating more deeply, more personally, and it won’t all be pleasant. The politicians can’t fix it anyway; they’ve proven that much. We create community for modern times, or we go under.

I’m glad your back improved. All good news is very welcome.

Brian, good to see Gannet; thanks for the pic. I was first on site that year, ahead of even Jamie. I lit the fire just there; Gannet moved it a bit the year following. I’ve checked, but I don’t seem to have an e-mail from you yet…

  17. I’ve just read on CM that Trowbridge had a stroke over Christmas! He says:

“Just got back on the internet from my Xmas stroke but am making good progress after spending a few days in the Yale New Haven Emergency Room and the Grimes Rehabilitation Center. Should be out in two weeks.”

I can only hope that if he’s hoping to be out in two weeks, it wasn’t a very bad one.
    Take care, Trowbridge!

  18. BrianFujisan, I should have said before – the mobile ‘phone number you have for me isn’t working at present.

I still haven’t received e-mail from you at either of my e-mail accounts.

  19. Sorry to hear about your friend Clark. Xmas can be terrible for the troubled.

And sorry to hear about your stroke Trowbridge. Speedy recovery mate.

  20. Transient ischemic attack Trow? Best wishes for recovery.

AA; I am interested in your offer. Been struggling with laptop. Have a reservation at genius bar (apple) monday.

  21. Ben, try Ubuntu; it could save you a few hundred dollars, and prevent future problems. Your hardware’s probably fine, and we could talk through the process on here for others’ benefit. How old’s the laptop?

  22. In all, you should be able to download, install and configure Ubuntu in an evening – the saving equates to a pretty high hourly rate…

  23. The best evidence that Russian hackers were NOT involved in helping elect Donald “Lock Her Up’ Trump is whether Obama gives Edward Snowden a pardon because if the American helped make his successor POTUS, he won’t get one from him.

  24. Why is no one talking about Edward Snowden being Trump’s hacker/leaker who made his criminal rants against Hillary prosecutorial since he is a contributor to Wikileaks, and an American living at Putin’e pleasure in Russia unless some POTUS grants him a pardon ?

  25. Er, because you’re talking about commenters at Craig Murray’s site, and Craig has stated his personal knowledge that the leaks were leaks not hacks? Because there’s zero evidence that Snowden had any involvement?

What interests me is that the US effectively gave Snowden to Russia by revoking his passport. I guess the US must share more dirty secrets with Russia than they do with South America… which figures.

  26. “Er, because you’re talking about commenters at Craig Murray’s site, and Craig has stated his personal knowledge that the leaks were leaks not hacks?”

Yesterday he said that he resigned from the FCO over the Iraq War which is no doubt how he sees it but someone said he was fired because of his megaphone diplomacy it would be equally true.

I’ll keep an open mind on the leaks/hacks.

  27. Brian, how is Andrew doing now? Give him my e-mail address if he wants.

“I feel The Dems Sabotaged Themselves Trow.. Bernnie..NO way.. Trump ..Mouthpiece”

Yep. It’s Big Money, corporate and financial power; they got the Democrat party to sabotage itself. They’d have preferred Clinton, but failing that they much preferred Trump over Sanders.
