  1. So in the UK the dominant virus is no longer vanilla Omicron (BA.1) with BA.1.1 likely having crossed the 50% of samples in the last few days. The defining mutation of BA.1.1 is R346K in the spike which is thought to further escape prior immunity. But if that wasn’t enough we’ve now got even weirder Omicron BA.2 seemingly growing even faster than BA.1.1 and likely at over 10% of current UK sequences based on rate of growth from backdated sequencing.

Nobody seems quite sure about the specific advantages BA.2, which differs in many mutations from BA.1, has just yet but it is already the dominant strain in Denmark.

So to sum up UK we’ve apparently got a declining BA.1 wave and simultaneous growing waves of BA.1.1 and BA.2 – BA.1.1 has the head start but BA.2 is catching up fast.

  2. Deleted the last Israel tweet because although cases were correct it seems Israel announced a load of backdated deaths making the daily announced death count enormous.

  3. Warning both videos extremely graphic and horrific audio on first video. Anyone, after watching this, still supporting what Putin is doing in Ukraine – GO FUCK YOURSELF

Scans reveal how Covid may change the brain

Catching Covid may cause changes to the brain, a study suggests.

Scientists found significant differences in MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans before and after infection.

Even after a mild infection, the overall size of the brain had shrunk slightly, with less grey matter in the parts related to smell and memory.

The researchers do not know whether the changes are permanent but stressed the brain could heal.

Lead author Prof Gwenaelle Douaud, from the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging, at the University of Oxford, said: “We were looking at essentially mild infection, so to see that we could really see some differences in their brain and how much their brain had changed compared with those who had not been infected was quite a surprise.”

Sri Lanka runs out of diesel, faces longest-ever blackout

Colombo: Diesel was no longer on sale across Sri Lanka on Thursday, crippling transport as the crisis-hit country’s 22 million people endure record-long power blackouts.

The South Asian nation is in the grips of its worst economic downturn since independence, sparked by an acute lack of foreign currency to pay for even the most essential imports.

Diesel – the main fuel for buses and commercial vehicles – was unavailable at stations across the island, according to officials and media reports.

…The state electricity monopoly said they would be forced to enforce a 13-hour power cut from Thursday – the longest ever – because they did not have diesel for generators.

  6. At least we needn’t worry about a slow death from radiation as we will all be drowned. Ireland totally fucked as well.

Severe acute hepatitis in children: investigate SARS-CoV-2 superantigens

Eleven of 12 of the Israeli patients were reported to have had COVID-19 in recent months, and most reported cases of hepatitis were in patients too young to be eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations. SARS-CoV-2 infection can result in viral reservoir formation. SARS-CoV-2 viral persistence in the gastrointestinal tract can lead to repeated release of viral proteins across the intestinal epithelium, giving rise to immune activation. Such repeated immune activation might be mediated by a superantigen motif within the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that bears resemblance to Staphylococcal enterotoxin, triggering broad and non-specific T-cell activation. This superantigen-mediated immune-cell activation has been proposed as a causal mechanism of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children.
